Heavy Things

Posted by Chris Robertson on

We all have heavy things hiding down in the deep.

No need for an anchor, they always sink.

Lies, illusions, delusions, and a little bit of truth,

Mix it all together, and for now, it’s “you.”

There once was security, you were marked by sheer purity.

But now that your older, walls fallen, mistakes made,

Life is not simple—you’ve discovered death and decay.

Which means this, more than anything else,

You’ve picked up a lot of heavy things along the way.

But when did it happen?

When did life get so hard?

Were you just a kid?

Was it something you did?

Day in, and day out, morning and night,

Wounds always exposed; they’re rarely out of sight.

Sure, we’re doing out best to make it look like they’re not there.

Because more than anything else, we just want others to care.

Why then, oh why, do so many just sit there and stare?

It hurts.

So with anger and clenched fists, here’s looking at you.

Don’t for a minute act like what I’m saying is not true.

We’ve got to speak out, speak up, and stand together.

Life’s so unpredictable, a lot like the weather.

So admit it, you hurt too.

At times you haven’t felt like you.

The things that you’ve done, all they’ve said in closed spaces,

It’s not a treasure to keep, all those false faces.

So reach over the bow, grab the rope, flex those muscles,

Dive way down, feel around, it’s bound to be a tussle.

Welcome to Reality!

This thing, life itself, is too heavy to carry alone.

The weight is too great to resist being known.

So go ahead and admit it out loud—things are heavier than you’d like.

With every passing day I’m more convinced the mystics are right,

That the only way to freedom is to live fully in the light.

Joy, pain, loss, and gain—it all just is.

The real choice then is this, where do you want to live?

Alone, in the deep, overwhelmed, constantly wallowing in defeat.

Or above, full of Love, where enough is enough.

Hear me now, I declare Good News with a shout.

Your pain is my pain is our pain, so we’re in the same boat.

All those things that continue to destroy and diminish,

All those things that you have decided to keep,

Just so you know, we all have heavy things hiding down in the deep.
